The highly anticipated third season of “Downton Abbey” is finally on its way in the United States on “Masterpiece” on PBS. In last weekend’s New York Times Downton Abbey’s favorite head house maid Anna Bates shared her beauty secrets with Tina Turnbow!

 Q. How would you describe your “Downton” character Anna’s beauty?
A. Anna’s beauty is discreet and clean. She is supposed to look like she has no makeup on. Of course, makeup is applied to look that way. It’s no-makeup makeup.

Q. What does that mainly consist of?
A. They actually use airbrush makeup for the show. They sheer it out so my skin looks even yet natural. The great thing about it is it lasts all day. My skin tone is made to look paler than I am. Then it’s just a bit of concealer where needed, a touch of blush and brow filler.

Q. What have you been using on your skin to keep it looking so smooth?
A. I use mainly products by Dermalogica. They have specialized formulas to target specific skin needs, which I like. It works well for my sensitive skin.

Q. Do you listen to your skin and adjust products accordingly?
A. Exactly. The condition of my skin changes often, depending on the season or if I’m traveling a lot. And since turning 32, my skin has become much drier, so I have to keep it more hydrated now. As I get older my skin shows more of how I am feeling, like a mirror. If I am stressed, or not getting enough sleep, I see it in my face right away.

Q. What kind of foundation do you use in your everyday life to even out your complexion?
A. I really like Laura Mercier’s oil-free primer and foundation. The oil-free formula eliminates the need for powder, which gives my skin a more natural glow. I only use powder in the T-zone, if needed.

Q. With your makeup do you prefer to play up a certain feature?
A. I tend to like more eye and a nude lip. I like M.A.C. eye shadows and lip glosses. And for my lashes I use Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara — it works wonders!

Q. Your hair is so silky. What hair care products have you been using lately?
A. I’ve been using Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis. My hair is in much better shape now. I also like the Extreme CAT, their spray-on protein treatment — it’s excellent!

Q.Is there a scent you like to wear on a regular basis?
A. The fragrance that suits me best is Romance by Ralph Lauren. It seems to blend into my chemistry, so it is nice and subtle. I don’t like to be doused in scent. This one is feminine, fresh and a bit musky.

Q. You were married in England in October of 2012. Can you describe what look you were going for with your hair and makeup?
A. I wanted to look like myself, most importantly. The look for my makeup was what I usually like, a smoky eye. But to go from day to night, we went with browns and coppers, plus a few individual lashes. It was more natural definition. I loved my hair. I wanted a modern take on an old Renaissance style. There were sections of my hair that were crimped and some that were curled. It was a great mix of romantic textures. It turned out to be a perfect day.
