An Icon, The Ponytail

It is finally the moment of the ponytail. Back when models were walking the FA13 runways (and even before that) the pony made heads turn. That seems like a bit much, but it is finally cold enough outside to embrace some of the fall runway looks, so this is a good starting point.

So simple, so fresh, so clean. And for good cause. Ever since Serena rocked those care-free ponies all over gossip girl I was sold. Lets face it, a lot of it comes from the fact there aren’t so many fast easy ways to control long locks. As I have written before here “If you aren’t expected at fifth-period calculus, your hair should not hang lower than your breasts, it looks like you’re trying too hard to reclaim your youth. Sorry, Demi.” But even the perfect lengths get in the way during a workout, washing delicates, or a sunday stroll. But that’s just it… The things that you need a ponytail for are boring, which by association makes the ponytail boring.

Not to mention, unfortunately the pony has also been associated with many less than cool icons such as the gym rat, dirty deli guys at the corner bodega, or stressed out moms in a car pool.

The ponytail has a couple things going for it. For starters it is classic. You can wear a sleek pony to a formal event or to the office. It works with clean or dirty hair. And almost works better with dirty hair which is great since we all know from multiple post (here and here) I do not have the time or energy to do my hair.

But then Alexander Wang pulled the tricks above out of his hat. A long sleek pony tail with a deep dip dyed base. Aha! The ponytail is completely reborn, yet again! So looks like it is time to pony up. Are you down?

thank you for linking me to this post. Ponytails do tend to be associated with boring and mundane things but they are definitely a classic and very sleek and fashionable in my opinion. They can bring sophistication to a look while also keeping your hair away from your face :)

I love ponytails, especially when you have those amazing tops that you don’t want to hide with hair, it’s an amazing choice.

Totally with you, Milene. Why should the top knot and a braid have all the fun?!?!
