The Holiday Pre-game Party Look

At the ripe old age of not in my twenties, I still enjoy a good pre-game celebration-party-dance-drinks… It sets the pace. The pre-game either knocks you out before you leave (which is useful, better to be knocked out at home or a friend’s couch than at the bar) or it gets you energized to seize the night full of opportunities for run-around-sue-fun.

The holidays bring lots of run-around-sue-fun to town. And most of this fun is paired well with a good pre-game strategy. And since we’re in the homestretch now, go big or go home!

While most holiday party looks preach a gold eye paired with glitter and lamé incorporated somewhere around enormous curls from a roller set, I’m going to say for the love of barely there, don’t do that. If my ramblings about Phoebe Philo all year have taught us anything it’s that less is more! That is, of course, when less includes a powerful pout.

Hair For a good holiday pre-game look I enjoy some volume in my just rolled-out-of-bed-wanna-be-french hair. The problem is these bangs. They don’t roll out of bed ready to go anywhere. No worries. The night before I went to bed with wet hair, added my favorite Aveda pure abundance style prep, wore a bun most of the day at work (which creates some waves), frizzed the underneath with a comb, and washed my bangs while I washed my face the night of the party and pre-game celebration. Blow dried those suckers and shook my head out.

Body I never ever, ever forget to moisturize. I feel sick without rubbing some amazing soothing lotion all over my body. For a pre-game I start with Aveda de-stress lotion mixed up with some Nars body shimmer on my shoulders and collar bones.

Makeup Started with Hermione masterpiece #3. Since it is the holidays, magic and wonder are always appreciated. A bit of my favorite Dior Airflash to start the night off right. Bronzer to contour my face into a skinner version of me. Nice rosy cheeks with a dab of Josie Maran Cheek Gelee. Ok. I said no glitter. And I meant no glitter to best avoid a drag-queen-toddlers-in-tiaras situation but that does not eliminated some nude color “shimmer” to my upper lids. I used Urban Decay Space Cowboy on the top with a navy eyeliner. Navy is less harsh than black, and I find it compliments most skin types better. Obviously, topped my eyes off with some Guerlain Mascara. Now that magic has been created let’s move on to wonder.

The Lips. Trust me when I tell you a strong lip will yes, leave a red ring on your champagne glass, (unless you can find a sneaky way to lick it) but more than that it creates Wonder. Wonder how her teeth are so white or wonder why her smile is so big. Applied Marc Jacobs Saboteur and topped it off with a little tiny baby bit of Dior gloss.

Nails This is where I am really going to drive home less is more, get your pre-game on! I can not tell you how over bright shimmery red nails with sparkle I am. And yes, that includes even if you only painted one nail and the rest are a dark dark steel. Cute trend, but super done. Barely there. I went completely bare. Go big or go home, right? However, I think a nice natural Essie ballet slipper or mademoiselle would have been better.

Dress Here is an opportunity to scratch that glitter-sequin-gold-sparkle itch. Our friends on the runways have been very serious about this. Balmain has 5 pound belts that sparkles & Dolce and Gabbana rocked tiaras that were a bit like crowns with shiny jewels. If they say it is ok, who am I to stand in your way?  I would suggest a pocket. Carrying a clutch gets old after about an hour and I often check mine with my coat. However, there are a couple things I would like with me. Solution = a pocket.

Jewelry Barely There. Minimal. Delicate.
