Proenza Schouler: Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez

Pronounced Pro-en-za School-er.

“Proenza Schouler was founded by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, who met during their first year as students at Parsons School of Design in New York. Originally from New Jersey and Florida, respectively, the designers were assigned to the same class in their freshman year at Parsons, and years later, persuaded their professors to allow them to collaborate on their senior thesis collection in 2002. Sophisticated and unique, the collection caught the attention of Barney’s New York, who bought it in its entirety, thus beginning a creative collaboration that would become their first collection. In need of a name for the label, Hernandez and McCollough decided on ‘Proenza Schouler,’ a combination of their mothers’ maiden names.”

“Two years later Proenza Schouler was awarded the inaugural Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue Fashion Fund Award. The designers have since won five CFDA Awards including the 2009 Accessory Designer of the year award, and the Womenswear Designer of the Year award in 2007, 2011, and 2013. These awards recognize both their talent and their contribution to reenergizing American fashion.”

“City: the urban landscape provides a counterbalance to more ‘natural’ sources of inspiration. The city of New York and its creative communities, galleries, and museums influence art inspired prints in referencing contemporary artists such as Cy Twombly or Christopher Wool. Sculptured, strong silhouettes are almost like armor, and mixed in with classics of the urban street wear such as varsity jackets, and denim.”

“New Classics: a mix of couture materials and great attention to detail and finishing’s. Fabrics such as tweed, jacquard and lace, traditionally associated to feminine silhouettes are substantially reworked through custom fabric developments.”

“New American Luxury: hand painting, quilting, garment printing and knitting are a few of the techniques applied to revisiting classic American sportswear and silhouettes. Classics are reinterpreted with a new ease and sophistication.”
