10 Beauty Rules to Break
If we learned anything from the Hunger Games, it’s that rules don’t mean much. It seems to me, pretty much anytime that Ruler of sorts wanted to do something and it was against the rules, well, he just changed them. I am not going to lie. I am not really into those books/movies. Teenagers killing teenagers isn’t my thing obviously, but throw a bunch of outdoorsy activities and fantasy type creatures into the mix a-n-d, I’m out. But, some rules are meant to be broken regardless of pretend forests with fire. As a wise women named Karen once told me, “no one likes to feel like a slacker.” So frankly, don’t feel bad about breaking the rules, everyone does it every now and again. And sometimes, we just throw those outdated “suggestions” to the wind and live our lives as we please.
According to a very informal, unscientific poll conducted on Gchat a couple hours ago with the Marc Jacobs girls: we all have our favorite beauty rules to break!
Rule #1 – Amanda, You should brush your hair everyday.
Every morning I wake up andRule #2 – Becky, You need to wash your face everyday.
I am certainly not advocating to not wash your face. But, as with gold bangles and glitter nails, depending on the person it can be overdone. Washing your face too much robs your skin of natural oils and does more harm than good. So the next time you feel yourself going towards the sink without a reason, maybe just splash some water on it. Works for Becky and it works for me.Rule #3 – Karen, Applying make-up with brushes is best.
Rule #4 – Alienor, You need to get a haircut every six to eight weeks.
Rule #5 – Katerina, Eyebrows need to match your hair color.
Miley, anyone?Rule #6 – Jen, Drinking water helps your skin.
So here is the thing, humans aren’t plants. And long story short, the way to perk up the outer layer of a plant isn’t going to be the way to perk up the outer layer of a human being. I feel you, Jen told me this and I didn’t believe her and then I had to say “You were right.” Skin doesn’t actually react to increased water consumption.Rule #7 – Michelle, When you chip a nail you should take the polish off before repainting.
Rule #8 – Robyn, No plucking above your eyebrows, only below.
Rule #9 – Kerry, Never sleep in your make-up.
Again, I am not advocating to sleep in your make-up. But, I will tell you this, Lou Dillon, featured in the NY times last week, learned the following tip from her mom Jane Birkin: “She taught me to put on black eye makeup before going to bed, so it looks all smudgy and beautiful in the morning.” Don’t listen to me, but for sure listen to a woman with a Hermes bag in her namesake.Rule #10 – Kate Moss, Use lipliner with your lipstick.
First, Happy Birthday Best Friend. Next, as the beauty icon turns 40 today she passed on this tip to Elle UK: “I love lipstick… I just slick it on, I don’t bother with lip liner.”What are your favorite beauty rules to break and what should we toss to the wind?
