A Strongly Worded Letter to Dry Shampoo
My Dearest Friend,When we first met, I was skeptical to say the least. I never told you, but for years before we met, I had quite an intimate relationship with an impostor of dry shampoo. I didn’t want to tell you because I was embarrassed. It started in college. I was too tired and too lazy to wash my hair, and I didn’t need to impress anyone. It is important you know that. I want you to be able to understand where I am coming from. So without anyone to impress, I didn’t care as much as maybe I should have about my hair and as a result I started to sprinkle my scalp with baby powder in the morning.
But, then the problems started: the powder was lighter than my hair color, I could never get it blended perfectly, and there was the time Claire came over to cut my hair and mistakenly held an intervention for my “dandruff problem.” That was awkward. But, I think the final straw was when I finally realized I could never get the bottom of my hair fresh without spilling baby powder all over my shoulders and clothes. I just couldn’t do it any longer. I needed more. It was hard, but I knew I needed an aerosol spray can.
I started using Oscar Blandi. I bought it at Sephora because when I am trying something new I like to go and talk it out first. That hasn’t changed. However, Oscar Blandi was too expensive to buy as frequently as, I quickly realized, I needed to.
I moved to drug store brands. First, I tried Psssst. I think that was a low point for me. My relationship with Pssst was terrible. The smell was gross, the formula was greasy, and I hated the way I felt when I used it. It was not fresh nor clean.
Next, I used Batiste. Batiste and I were together for many years. We loved each other. There are so many wonderful scents and variations based on hair color. I can remember when the product first became available in the United States and I didn’t have to smuggle it across boarders any more. It was such a wonderful day. We went on like that… just happy. It was true bliss. If I am being completely honest, I still love Batiste very much. Unfortunately, Duane Reade dropped Batiste. At first, I would order Batiste from soap.com, but it became increasingly impossible to get my packages from the part-time doorman downstairs. I had to move on.
Finally, one day at the office, I was digging through a co-worker’s desk for snacks. (Maria always has the best snacks and I actually still owe her a bag of goldfish.) There it was. My knight in shining armor. Dove Dry Shampoo. The bottle is big. The smell is amazing. So good in fact, my boyfriend asked me if I got new perfume and told me I smelled great. The spray itself is much like an airy dream.
Needless to say, I feel our relationship has finally come full circle. We are in a good place now, if you can just keep your distribution in check. I ask that you please continue to be available for sale in my local drug stores. As long as you can keep up your end of the bargain, I promise to keep up mine, which is to buy you, and use you unconditionally whenever I don’t have the time or energy to wash my hair. I am excited about us spending the rest of our lives together.
